What is the difference in Nymo Thread sizes? A Beading Nymo Thread comparison!

Nymo Beading Thread Comparison - The Sizes Explained

Why is there so many styles of Nymo thread, mainly each has its own purpose that we can explain in our Nymo beading thread comparison blog. Nymo thread is available in several sizes, ranging from “OO” (the thinnest) to “D” (the thickest). The most commonly used sizes are OO, O, B, and D.

When choosing a size, it’s best to pick the thickest thread that will still pass easily through your beads. This gives you the best strength without damaging your bead holes.

  • Size OO – 0.127 mm in diameter. Best for tiny size 15 seed beads or projects requiring multiple thread passes.

  • Size O – 0.152 mm in diameter. Works for the same purposes as Size OO but gives slightly more strength.

  • Size B – 0.203 mm in diameter. The most popular choice. Suitable for stitches like peyote and brick stitch, and works well with size 8, 10, 11, and 15 seed beads.

  • Size D – 0.304 mm in diameter. Stronger and thicker than Size B. Often used for size 8, 11, and 15 seed beads when you want extra durability.

Quick Tips for Choosing Nymo Thread

  • For delicate projects with tiny beads, stick with OO or O.

  • For everyday bead embroidery and weaving, Size B is the go-to option.

  • For larger projects or heavier beads, Size D gives stronger results.

When it comes to choosing between Nymo B vs Nymo D, I know it can feel a little confusing at first. Personally, I always reach for Nymo D thread when I’m doing flat stitch beadwork because the extra thickness gives me strength and structure. For fringe beadwork though, I prefer Nymo B, since it drapes more naturally and lets the fringe move beautifully.

No matter which size you use, I highly recommend running your Nymo thread through beeswax or thread conditioner—it helps prevent tangling, protects against fraying, and keeps your beadwork durable for years to come.
