🇨🇦 Strike Overview & Current Status
-
On September 25, 2025, Canada Post workers, represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), launched a nationwide strike in response to government-mandated reforms.
-
Canada Post immediately announced that all operations are shut down: no processing, no deliveries, and no new items accepted until the disruption ends.
-
Some post offices are closed, and scheduled mail pickups have been canceled.
-
Service guarantees are suspended for items already in the postal network.
-
Canada Post says once the strike is over, it could take time for the system to recover fully—backlogs, delays, and gradual resumption are expected.
⚠️ Why the Strike Happened & Key Issues
-
The federal government announced sweeping reforms to make Canada Post more financially sustainable, citing massive losses and structural deficits.
-
-
Ending door-to-door delivery for many households over time, shifting to community mailboxes.
-
Closing or consolidating some rural post offices.
-
Slower delivery standards for non-urgent mail (e.g. moving by ground instead of air).
-
Removing or easing restrictions on how quickly stamp prices can change.
Among the proposed changes:
-
-
CUPW and postal workers view these as an “attack” on good, unionized jobs and say the government’s approach was abrupt and lacking consultation.
-
Canada Post and the government argue that the prior model isn’t viable: they’re projecting daily losses, an inability to sustain repeated bailouts, and competitive pressures in parcel delivery.
Prime Minister Mark Carney (or the federal government) has said that Canada Post loses over CA$10 million per day, calling the status quo “not viable.”
🧭 What This Means for Customers & Businesses
-
No mail or parcel deliveries will happen until the strike ends.
-
No new items accepted into the postal system during the strike.
-
After the strike, expect backlogs and delays for days or even weeks as postal operations normalize.
-
Items that were already “in transit” may still be delayed or stuck until services resume fully.
-
The progressive rollback of home mail delivery may permanently affect how mail is delivered in many areas, especially rural or suburban zones.
