U.S. Orders: Tariffs, HS Codes & What To Expect (Updated Aug 25, 2025)

We ship a lot of bead supplies to our U.S. besties. Here’s how recent U.S. customs changes affect small parcels, what HS codes mean, and why your cart may show duties/taxes at checkout.

What changed in the U.S.?

  • The U.S. ended “de minimis” duty-free treatment for most low-value imports (formerly up to US$800) effective August 29, 2025. Even small parcels now go through formal customs clearance, and duties/fees may apply.

  • Some China-origin products may incur Section 301 additional duties (set by the U.S. government).

What is an HS code?

Think of an HS code like a product’s passport for customs. It determines the duty rate, admissibility rules, and paperwork.

For glass bead supplies

  • Most loose or hank glass beads are classified as HS 7018.10.

  • Under the U.S. tariff schedule, the base duty is often “Free.” (Other fees/taxes can still apply under the new rules.)

Supplies vs. Finished Jewelry (why it matters)

  • Supplies/components (loose glass beads) → typically HS 7018.10 (base duty often Free).

  • Finished beadwork/jewelry (e.g., earrings) → usually HS 7117 (imitation jewelry) and often dutiable (many lines at ~11%). Rates vary by material/value.

Will my U.S. order be charged duties/taxes?

  • If your cart contains supplies that are not China-origin, you may still see broker/processing fees due to formal clearance—even when the base duty is “Free.”

  • If any items are China-origin, Section 301 duties may apply. We list country of origin on product pages where possible.

  • If you buy finished beadwork (not just supplies), U.S. customs may assess duties under HS 7117.

What Sundaylace is doing

  • We classify products with the correct HS code and track country of origin to prevent surprises.

  • We’re updating checkout messaging so you’ll know when duties/taxes may be collected by the carrier or at delivery.

  • We’re evaluating DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) options to pre-collect duties/taxes and reduce doorstep surprises.

Quick FAQ

Do glass seed beads have U.S. duty now?

The base duty for many glass bead subheadings (7018.10) is still “Free.” But because de minimis ended, small parcels now clear formally and can have carrier/processing fees; country-specific programs (like Section 301 for China-origin) still apply.

Why do finished earrings get duty if supplies don’t?

Finished jewelry is usually classified under 7117, which is dutiable on many lines; components are different products with different rules.

Will my order be delayed?

Some foreign posts and couriers announced temporary pauses as they adapt to the new U.S. rules; networks are actively adjusting. We’ll ship promptly on our side and share carrier ETAs at checkout.
