Question: "What is a Hank???"

What is a Hank?

If you’re new to beading, you’ve probably seen the word hank and wondered, “What is a hank?” Don’t worry—I was once a new beader too! After buying from auction sites (and sometimes learning the hard way), I realized that understanding bead weights is just as important as knowing bead sizes.

A hank is a bundle of bead strands tied together. Think of it as the standard “unit” that beads are sold in. Knowing how much beadwork you can get from a hank helps you buy with confidence. Some hanks are smaller like 13/0 or 15/0 seedbeads or short like 11/0 Charloote beads. However its a bunch of beads that are bunched together in strands that make it "a hank", even if the weights are different.

Breaking Down Bead Weights with Hanks

Here’s a simple guide to common seedbead bead types and their weights:

  • Full Hank → About 12 strands, weighing roughly 40 grams

  • Half Hank or Short Hank → 6 strands, about 18–20 grams

Why Bead Weights Matter with Hanks

Bead weights can feel confusing at first. However, knowing them helps you:

  • Plan projects without running out mid-design.

  • Compare pricing across different sellers.

  • Choose the right quantity for small or large beadwork projects.

For example, a full hank of size 11 seed beads is perfect if you’re making a beaded medallion or multiple pairs of earrings. But if you only need beads for fringe or accents, a short or half hank might be plenty.

My Personal Beading Tip

When I was first learning, I didn’t realize how much thread and how many beads a project could take. I thought a small bundle would be plenty—until I ran out halfway through my design! That’s when I began to understand the importance of bead weights and thread choices.

For example, Nymo D thread pairs beautifully with heavier beadwork, like flat stitch. It holds strong and keeps the beadwork in place. On the other hand, Nymo B thread works wonderfully for fringe because it gives more movement and drape.

No matter which size you choose, I recommend running your thread through beeswax or a thread conditioner. This simple step protects the fibers, reduces tangling, and helps your beadwork last longer.

Knowing the weight of a hank of beads and matching it with the right thread means you’ll avoid surprises and set yourself up for a smooth, successful project.

Now, when customers ask me “What is a hank?” I can smile and say—it’s not just a bundle of beads, it’s the starting point for a beading journey.
